excessive noise: 205

Since these guys moved in at the start of the year, every Friday (or at least every 2 weeks) they have there windows open, music blaring and people talking so loud. It's driving me insane. I understand the need to socialise, but its unnecessary for neighbours to have to put up with it.
There have been numerous occasions where it has gone on until 2/3am.

I have made a complaint to the body corp about them.

People really need to understand they live in a apartment building and walls are thin and to have respect for the people that live around them.

Is anyone else being affected by this? Idid see some complaints about them in another thread.

Hi Scott, yeah I mentioned the excessive noise from #205 in another thread.
I said "it must be hell for occupants near #205 on their party nights - usually Fri & Sat nights" and it seems I was right.

I feel sorry for you and everyone else around #205, during their regular late night, boozy "parties" - except the neighbour who posted he liked their loud music. He didn't say if he also likes the shouting, laughing & cheering that must permeate thru his walls.

I have a cousin living at 1 Powlett St (the upmarket building next door, above Laurent) and she says she can hear the noise from her apartment when she opens her north facing balcony (coming from the pool area of 166 late on most Friday nights).

There is no question they are in breach of excessive noise rules, which usually state that no noise made inside your apartment, should be heard outside your apartment, sometimes restricted to evening sleep hours e.g. 10 pm to 7 am. As you say, their noise goes as late as 2 or 3am - It is usually worst around midnight (that's when I hear it, and I am nowhere near #205).

I hope you get some satisfaction from the body corp. soon.

Finally, peace and quiet ...
No more shouting, jeering & loud music.
I think they left their apartment after closing their open windows, at around 11.2o pm

I found this after googling, on the melbourne.gov.vic website
Report a noise issue

If you are experiencing noise disturbance, speak to the person or business that is causing the noise as soon as the problem arises, expressing your case honestly and respectfully. In many instances, they are unaware that they are causing a problem and will quickly remedy the situation.

For urgent matters, you can contact the Victoria Police.
If you are experiencing a noise disturbance you can contact us online to report this issue or call the City of Melbourne on 03 9658 9658 from 7.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday.
Before reporting the issue, consider the following:
  • What happened? Be prepared to describe the noise in as much detail as you can.
  • Where did it happen? It is always helpful to know where the noise is occurring. If you don't know the exact address, the cross streets and other landmarks are very important.
  • When did it happen? Timely reporting is critical. Please call us as soon as possible after you observe violations.
We ask you for your name and phone number so that we can follow-up with you and let you know how the incident was resolved. This information is kept confidential.

Most issues can be dealt with without revealing the complainant’s identity to the source of noise. In a small number of cases the complainant’s identity becomes known, for example if action is taken in the Magistrates Court.

Agree with you all, there is a certain amount of noise that is tolerable. When they started yelling out the window, that was really crossing the line. We actually buzzed 205 and asked them to turn volume down. They were nice and turned it down straight away, stopped yelling and closed the windows. However, 305 wasn't so nice and ignored the buzzer and kept partying. Maybe next time we will just call the police.

Honestly, I encourage all of you to call the police if it's bothering you. I have always been told to and have on numerous occasions if it is affecting me. I paid good money to buy an apartment in a quiet and respectful building, not a frat house.
Call the police, document times and dates and email to BC, the more we all do this the less it will happen in the future.
